You can<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/psychosis\/symptoms\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/psychosis\/symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"> read more about the symptoms on the NHS website<\/span><\/a>. <br><br>It can be incredibly frightening and usually you will need an anti-psychotic medication to help you get over this particular illness.<br><br>There are two main myths about psychosis in the perinatal period.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm3c268ca\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm3c268ca gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g6a3d58\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g6a3d58 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Myth 1: You can\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t have children if you\u2019ve had a psychotic illness<\/strong><br><br>This is untrue. With the right support and advice your mental health should not prevent you planning to start a family.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g769ff7\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g769ff7 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Myth 2: You can\u2019t take any antipsychotic medication whilst pregnant as this will damage your baby<\/strong><br><br>This is untrue but is something often heard, so women may stop all their medications if they are on them as soon as they find out they are pregnant. Sometimes this leads to an otherwise well women becoming psychotic and is not good for mum or the baby.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gba8ef8\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gba8ef8 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">If you are taking medication, <strong>don\u2019t stop taking it <\/strong>without seeking advice from your midwife, GP, health visitor or mental health team first.<br><br>Some of you may have had psychosis at different points in your life. It could have happened years ago and only once when you were much younger. Your life could be in a very different place now and the timing right for you to have a baby.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm89124d7\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm89124d7 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g316a01\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g316a01 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Get advice<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gdc12d7\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gdc12d7 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">If you have had psychosis in the past, It is important that you seek advice from your GP, midwife or health visitor to think about life following the birth of your baby.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gbfc5c8\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gbfc5c8 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Having a baby can be a wonderful thing but sometimes mums need just a little bit of help to make sure they don\u2019t become unwell following the baby\u2019s arrival.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g39a566\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g39a566 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">We know that someone who has experienced psychosis in the past has a higher risk of experiencing further psychosis following the birth of their baby. This has nothing to do with what caused any previous psychosis, but having a baby is physically and emotionally demanding, even if you have never had a psychotic episode previously. If you have had psychosis in the past then you are \u2018vulnerable\u2019 to having another post birth no matter how many years ago the original psychosis was.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g68a291\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g68a291 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">The aim of this section is to educate you, not frighten you so if you have any concerns please do speak to one of your maternity team, midwife, health visitor or GP who will get the best advice for you.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gmae4db68\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmae4db68 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g154136\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g154136 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Postpartum Psychosis<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g08746c\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g08746c gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">There are also a tiny proportion of people who may develop symptoms of psychosis following the birth of their baby, who have never experienced psychosis before.&nbsp; This is called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/post-partum-psychosis\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/post-partum-psychosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">postpartum psychosis<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp; It is very treatable, as those who have experienced a previous episode of psychosis will know. So if you notice any symptoms like those mentioned at the beginning of this section \u2013 speak urgently to your family, GP, health visitor or midwife.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g945d6b\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g945d6b gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">If left untreated, this can become a psychiatric emergency very quickly so it\u2019s important that you, or another family member, access help immediately.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gfe34db\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gfe34db gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Remember \u2013 this section is to inform you, not frighten you, and give you the chance to get immediate help.<br><br>With the right support your symptoms can be treated promptly so that your bonding and time with your baby doesn\u2019t get spoilt by an untimely illness.<br><br>The important thing is to remember to keep taking your medications.
