The depressive episodes may be less intense with Bipolar I, but the mania is more severe.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-1\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Bipolar II disorder<br>More than one episode of severe depression, while manic episodes tend to be milder.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-2\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Rapid cycling<br>Four or more episodes of mania or depression in a 12-month period.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-3\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Cyclothymia<br>While the extremes of mood with cyclothymia are not as severe as in other types of bipolar disorder, they can last longer. They can sometimes go on to develop into full bipolar disorder.<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm3890208\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm3890208 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-gfab747\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gfab747 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Women with a history of bipolar affective disorder have a 20% risk of suffering a severe recurrence following delivery and an even higher risk (approaching 50%) of experiencing any mood episode in the postpartum period, including non-psychotic major depression. <sup>2,3<\/sup> Risk of developing <a href=\"https:\/\/path-perinatal.eu\/uk\/professionals\/postpartum-psychosis\/\" data-type=\"professionals\" data-id=\"11028\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">postpartum psychosis<\/span><\/a> increases to 50% in women with a diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder and family history (mother or sister having postpartum psychosis).<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g067415\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g067415 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">For women with known diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder, the choice to continue medication during pregnancy balances the risks of an untreated illness with the risks of medication exposure.
