It involves a lot more than eating behaviour; people affected by them are constantly worried about weight gain, how to avoid taking in calories and how to get rid of calories.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm9ea453c\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm9ea453c gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-image-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<section id=\"gmb7a7744\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmb7a7744 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container gutentor-rm-ct-space-d gutentor-rm-ct-space-t gutentor-rm-ct-space\">\n<div id=\"section-ge00e2e\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-ge00e2e gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong><strong>Types of Eating Disorders<sup>1<\/sup>&#8211;<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g30988a\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g30988a gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Anorexia Nervosa-<\/strong><br><br>A disorder characterized by deliberate weight loss, induced and sustained by the patient. This can lead to undernutrition, endocrine, metabolic changes and disturbances of bodily function.<br><br>The symptoms include restricted dietary choice, excessive exercise, induced vomiting and purgation, and use of appetite suppressants and diuretics.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g9e2a9a\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g9e2a9a gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Bulimia Nervosa-<\/strong><br><strong><br><\/strong>A syndrome characterized by repeated bouts of overeating and an excessive preoccupation with the control of body weight, leading to a pattern of overeating followed by vomiting or use of purgatives.<br><br>Symptoms include overconcerns with body shape and weight, repeated vomiting, tiredness, feeling guilty, menstrual irregularities.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g2d9c3f\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g2d9c3f gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Binge Eating Disorder-<\/strong><br><strong><br><\/strong>A disorder characterised by dieting and binge-eating, but the person does not make themselves vomit. It can cause significant weight gain and be very distressing for the individual.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm1a80592\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm1a80592 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-gf9ced2\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gf9ced2 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Other types of eating disorders include<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g0282eb\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e7 section-g0282eb gutentor-element gutentor-element-list\"><ul class=\"grid-row gutentor-grid-item-wrap list-indicator-icon\"><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-0\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Atypical Anorexia Nervosa &amp; Bulimia Nervosa<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-1\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Overeating associated with other psychological disturbances<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-2\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Vomiting associated with other psychological disturbances<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-3\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Psychogenic vomiting<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-4\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Eating disorder, unspecified<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gmd559759\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmd559759 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g020c85\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g020c85 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Eating disorder may impact on a woman\u2019s fertility, but it does not preclude pregnancy. Between 1.5-7.5% of pregnant women may experience an eating disorder<sup>2,3<\/sup>. It is associated with adverse obstetric outcomes (including intrauterine growth restriction, miscarriage, pre-term birth, low birth weight, complications during labour), difficulties with infant feeding and family mealtimes.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gc4fa7f\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gc4fa7f gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">A substantial proportion of women with pre-pregnancy eating disorders have continuation or recurrence of symptoms post-partum. The disruption in sleep and mealtimes and the need to adapt to the baby\u2019s routines, especially around feeding, makes it challenging for many mothers to establish and maintain their own eating patterns.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g1f0606\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g1f0606 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Women with eating disorders can experience depression, increased anxiety and distress during their pregnancy and also following child-birth. For these reasons, it is important to engage women with eating disorders in the preconception period.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gmf1dd864\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmf1dd864 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g840336\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g840336 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>For a woman with an eating disorder in pregnancy <\/strong><br><strong>or the postnatal period<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-gf78168\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e7 section-gf78168 gutentor-element gutentor-element-list\"><ul class=\"grid-row gutentor-grid-item-wrap list-indicator-icon\"><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-0\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Consider psychological intervention (guided self-help, talking therapies such as CBT) in line with NICE guidelines on Eating Disorders<sup>4<\/sup><\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-1\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Monitor woman&#8217;s condition carefully throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-2\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Assess the need for foetal growth scans<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-3\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Discussing the importance of healthy eating during pregnancy and the postnatal period and support mothers on feeding the baby in line with NICE recommendations on maternal and child nutrition<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-4\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Based on severity of symptoms and risk factors, consider referral to a nutritionist, dietitian or specialist Eating Disorders service<\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm8335a02\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm8335a02 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g2232ab\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g2232ab gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Healthcare professionals should encourage women with eating disorders to have a support network in place to enable them feel prepared and stay well after the birth of their baby.
