It might seem a strange question to ask when preparing to become a parent. <br><br>However, the more you think about it, the more similarities there are between pregnancy and the transition into adulthood. <br><br>In both cases your body starts to physically change, hormones change, and you may start to experience mood swings. <br><br>People around you might say that this is all normal, but change can take some getting used to!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gmba45ff4\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmba45ff4 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g41ab7b\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g41ab7b gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>What does matrescence mean?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g0bafcb\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g0bafcb gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">In 1973 the anthropologist Dana Raphael came up with the phrase \u201cmatrescence\u201d to describe the process of becoming a mother. <br><br>This word is made from the words \u201cmatre\u201d, which means \u201cmother\u201d in Latin, and \u201cadolescence\u201d.<br><br>Dana highlighted that:<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g3d55bb\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e7 section-g3d55bb gutentor-element gutentor-element-list\"><ul class=\"grid-row gutentor-grid-item-wrap list-indicator-icon\"><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-0\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\"> Becoming a mother is a time of significant change <\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-1\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\"> In addition to the changes to the body, parents are also psychologically adjusting to how they now fit in with world around them <\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><li class=\"gutentor-list-item grid-lg-12 grid-md-12 grid-12\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-item gutentor-single-item-2\"><span class=\"gutentor-list-item-wrap g-s-list-wrap\"><span class=\"gutentor-single-list-item-icon\"><i class=\"list-item-icon fas fa-arrow-right\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"gutentor-list-item\"><p class=\"gutentor-single-item-title\">Relationships with others can change, and our expectations of ourselves change. <\/p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g248eb2\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g248eb2 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">This is like the adjustments we face as teenagers.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm38e11df\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm38e11df gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g2830e6\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g2830e6 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong><strong>Identity<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-ge53efa\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-ge53efa gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">Becoming a parent changes our identity. Some people feel they can step into the role straight away, but for a lot of people, it can take some time for \u201cthe shoe to fit\u201d or to feel comfortable with new label \u201cmum.\u201d<br><br>It is important to remember that while this identity of \u201cmother\u201d marks a new chapter in our lives, it does not replace our identity. <br><br>\u201cMother\u201d is now another identity we have, in addition to many others, such as \u201cdaughter\u201d, \u201csister\u201d, \u201cfriend\u201d, \u201cteacher\u201d or \u201ccolleague\u201d.<br><br>Since each pregnancy is different, we may feel a change in who we are each time we have a child. Whether this is our first child or our sixth. The word matrescence also recognises the change in identity experienced when becoming a mother through surrogacy or adoption.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm875ac24\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm875ac24 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g3f234d\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g3f234d gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Whilst the new identity of \u201cmother\u201d does not replace our old identity, there may be parts of our identity that we miss.<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm7c7d57b\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm7c7d57b gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g09f6ff\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g09f6ff gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">For example, we might miss feeling independent. If we are on maternity leave from a job, we might miss our \u201cwork identity\u201d. It is easy to feel guilty about missing our old life or even resentful towards our new role at times.<br><br>Missing your old life is okay. It does not make you a bad mum, and a lot of other parents experience this too.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gmc60afd8\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gmc60afd8 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g637d41\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g637d41 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Acknowledge your feelings<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g1c3967\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g1c3967 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">It is helpful to acknowledge the awkwardness and grief we might feel.<br><br>Giving ourselves permission to have these feelings helps us to also accept the reality our current role, which will continue to change as time goes on. <br><br>As Dr Sacks says, \u201cYou have to first acknowledge the feelings of loss when you let go of one way of living to begin another\u201d.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm3baeb16\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm3baeb16 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-gabb8ec\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-gabb8ec gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>Manage expectations<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g337549\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g337549 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text centre\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">So much advice is given to us during our pregnancy (whether asked for or otherwise), but we have very few conversations about this change in our identity. A lot of the advice given is often focused on the baby.<br><br>We have fewer conversations about our own adjustment to the role of being a parent. Our expectations of how to be a parent will be different, depending on our own parents, our relationships to them, as well as the cultural expectations around us.<br><br>Do you have friends who already have children, or perhaps most people you know don\u2019t have young children? On your social media do you see posts of your friend\u2019s children having a meltdown because they can\u2019t have ice cream for breakfast? Or are all the posts you see highlights of perfectly behaved babies? <br><br>This can all add to our idea of what parenthood should look like. Do we have fair expectations for ourselves as parents? Or are we expecting a constant level of perfection that is impossible to reach?<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section id=\"gm45c9d22\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-m3 section-gm45c9d22 gutentor-module gutentor-container-cover has-color-bg has-custom-bg\"><div class=\"grid-container\">\n<div id=\"section-g37a333\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g37a333 gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><h3 class=\"gutentor-text\"><strong>Getting support<\/strong><\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"section-g0ce41a\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e1 section-g0ce41a gutentor-element gutentor-element-advanced-text\"><div class=\"gutentor-text-wrap\"><p class=\"gutentor-text\">If you are finding the transition into parenthood more difficult than you expected, then name what is upsetting you. You could talk about it with a friend, your midwife, health visitor or GP.<br><br>Acknowledge your distress and take the time to accept your feelings. When you\u2019re ready, make a plan for how to adapt to this new chapter in your life. This could include things like finding out about your Keeping In Touch days at work, or phoning a friend to plan when they can visit.<br><br>\u201cTherapy does not work by having big ideas. It just takes time to live through the change.\u201d &#8211; Dr Sacks.<br><br>So, give yourself some slack. We know that adolescence can be a bumpy journey. Most of us needed some kind of support as teenagers, whether it was a wise teacher, a reassuring parent, or a friend\u2019s sense of humour to help us not take things too seriously.
