Training for Healthcare Professionals

Who is this course aimed towards: Health and social care professionals or practitioners who provide care and support to pregnant women, women who have a child up to a year old, and their partners (e.g. medics, psychologists, nurses, occupational therapists, general practitioners, peer support workers etc.).

Resources required:

  • webinar format – laptop or similar device with internet connection

  • face-to-face – no specific equipment required


Module 1:
Awareness of Perinatal Mental Illness

Aims and Objectives

  • Increase in awareness of PMI

  • Develop understanding of its wider impact

  • Increase in awareness of common mental health problems in the perinatal period

  • Support available for parents and families

  • When to refer to secondary care services

Length of session: 1.5 hour.


Module 2:
Understanding and challenging stigma related to Perinatal Mental Illness

Aims and Objectives

  • Understanding different types of stigma

  • Acknowledging different barriers

  • Challenging stigma

Length of session: 1.5 hour.


Module 3:
Improving Communication and Self-Care for Healthcare Professionals

Aims and Objectives

  • Be more aware of how to effectively communicate with the parents whom professionals support.

  • Be aware of barriers to good communication.

  • Recognise the importance of looking after our own wellbeing as professionals.

Length of session: 1.5 hour.
